What Recruiters Look for in 10 Seconds of a CV
First impressions matter more than you think
Recruiters don’t always have the luxury of spending several minutes carefully analysing every CV. In fact, most CVs are scanned in as little as 10 seconds before a decision is made on whether to shortlist or move on.
That might sound harsh, but it reflects the reality of fast-paced hiring environments where recruiters may be reviewing hundreds of applications for a single role.
So, what exactly are recruiters looking for in those first few seconds?
👀 1. Clear structure and readability
The very first thing a recruiter notices is how easy your CV is to read.
If your CV is cluttered, poorly formatted, or difficult to navigate, it often gets skipped — regardless of experience.
Recruiters look for:
Clean, simple layout
Clear headings (Experience, Education, Skills)
Consistent formatting
Easy-to-scan bullet points
If it takes effort to read, it’s already at a disadvantage.
💼 2. Relevant experience at a glance
Recruiters quickly scan for keywords and job titles that match the role.
They are asking:
“Does this person have relevant experience?”
“Have they done something similar before?”
“How recent is their experience?”
Even if you have strong experience, if it’s not easy to identify within seconds, it may be overlooked.
🎯 3. Job title alignment
Your most recent or current job title carries significant weight.
Recruiters often make quick assumptions based on:
Seniority level (Junior, Specialist, Manager, etc.)
Industry relevance
Career progression
If your job titles don’t clearly align with the role you’re applying for, it can slow down or negatively impact shortlisting.
🔑 4. Key skills and keywords
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), but even when they don’t, recruiters still scan for key skills manually.
They look for:
Technical skills (e.g. software, tools, systems)
Industry-specific terms
Required competencies listed in the job description
If the right keywords aren’t visible quickly, the CV may not move forward.
📍 5. Location and availability
This is often a quick yes/no decision point.
Recruiters immediately check:
Location (are you local or willing to relocate?)
Notice period or availability
Work eligibility (if relevant)
If these don’t match the role requirements, the CV may not progress further.
📈 6. Career progression and stability
Within seconds, recruiters also scan for patterns such as:
Job hopping vs stability
Promotions or career growth
Gaps in employment
A clear upward trajectory can strengthen a CV significantly, even in a short review.
💡 The reality: clarity beats complexity
You don’t need an overly designed CV or long paragraphs to impress a recruiter. In fact, simplicity often performs better.
The goal is simple:
👉 Make it easy for a recruiter to say “yes” in 10 seconds.
Your CV is not just a document — it’s a marketing tool for your career. If a recruiter can quickly understand who you are, what you’ve done, and why you’re relevant, you dramatically increase your chances of getting shortlisted.
At JCM Consultants, we see every day how small improvements in CV clarity can lead to big differences in interview opportunities.
